Dimitrios Gournis(43) is an associate professor at the University of Ioannina in Greece. He has received his Ph.D. diploma in Materials Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, National Technical University of Athens in 1998. He worked  as the visiting professor at Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, University of Groningen (RuG) in the Netherlands in the period 2008/2009.

Rearch Interests and Activities:

D. Gournis is an experimental synthetic chemist working in the area of layered and nanoporous materials. His research activities/interests concern the chemistry of phyllomorphous materials (in particular clays, pillared clays, organo-clays and carbon layered structures), hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposites, carbon nanostructures (carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, graphene, graphite oxide), mesoporous materials, magnetic nanoparticles and biocatalysts.

Synthetic procedures: intercalations reactions, sol-gel, hydrothermal synthesis, Catalytically Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVD), solid state reactions, Langmuir-Blodgett.

Characterization techniques: powder XRD; FTIR, Raman, UV-Vis,

EPR and Mossbauer spectroscopies, DTA/DSC/TGA, porosity measurements, SEM microscopy.
